Watermelon — is it Good for You?

Watermelon is a Chinese Medicine remedy which is used for excess heat and for cooling the system. It’s a treat in summer, but if eaten in winter, it can make you colder and slow down your system. In winter we want to eat more ginger.  In summer most of us need to keep cool.  So a slice of watermelon, eaten at least an hour and a half after a meal (to avoid fermentation in the stomach) is a good thing, provided you don’t have excess yeast overgrowth as it contains a lot of sugar.  Ditto if you have blood sugar issues.

Go easy on the watermelon — Chinese Medicine cautions putting cold foods in the stomach.   Even without refrigeration, watermelon is a cooling remedy.

Enjoy your summer and do keep cool! And remember, all things in moderation.
